The Mali Benches are an urban furniture project developed by MaliArts in collaboration with Taller de Diseño Ecológico and M-Urbano, as part of the remodeling of the main square of Malinalco, State of Mexico. Keeping in mind that one of the main objectives of the new square was to create spaces for coexistence, both for locals and tourists, the design of the banks is extremely important.
The primary intention of the design is the functionality of the benches, specifically their comfort and durability. The seat is prefabricated in Mexico City, while the backrest was designed to be manufactured on site by local blacksmiths in Malinalco. The result is a series of modular benches that allow for a diverse range of spatial configurations, and that adapt to their context, both functionally and aesthetically.
